Yeh mastaani shaam, Kishore ke naam

Yeh shaam mastani, madhosh kiye jaaye ... Kishore Kumar's madhoshi won every music listener's heart. Here was a man whose passion for singing has made him a legend in the hearts of millions. Probably the most popular and successful male playback singer in Bollywood ever. From 1946 till his sudden death in 1987 he moved up steadily to become the Baadshah of Playback singing.

Kishore Kumar (August 4, 1929 - October 13, 1987), was born as Abhas Ganguly, in a Bengali family in a Khandwa, a small town in central India. Perhaps the most popular Bollywood film playback singer of all times, he sang in several Indian languages (Hindi, Bengali, Marathi, Assamese, Gujarati, Kannada, Bhojpuri, Oriya).
Although known primarily for his successes as a singer, Kishore Kumar was a noted actor. His comedy work included Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi, Half Ticket, Padosan, Baap Re Baap, Pyar Diwana (1973), and Hungama (1971)). But he also displayed his caliber in serious roles in films such as Naukri, Bandi, Door Gagan Ki Chhaon Mein, Door Ka Raahi.

In addition, Kishore achieved notable successes as a lyricist, composer, producer, director, screenwriter and scriptwriter. He won the Filmfare award for the best singer eight times:
- 1969 Roop Tera Mastana - Aradhana
- 1975 Dil Aisa Kisi Ne Mera Toda - Amanush
- 1978 Khaike Paan Banarasu Wala - Don
- 1980 Hazar Raahen - Thodisi Bewafaii
- 1982 Pag Ghungroo Baandh Meera - Namak Halaal
- 1983 Agar Tum Na Hote - Agar tum na hote
- 1984 Manzilen Apni Jagah - Sharaabi
- 1985 Saagar Kinaare - Saagar
Read more …

You probably know that he married four times. But do you know where he got his inspiration for his famous yodelling style? Or do you know who inspired him in his comedy? Although he was never formally trained in music, do you know whom he considered his Guru? Who inspired him to do his first live performance? How much did he charge Satyajit Ray to sing in his film Ghare Baire/ The Home and the World (1981)?

This Wednesday ‘Taraana’ will have a special feature on Kishore Kumar. But an artist of his stature cannot be honoured in just one program- so we’ll have two! This week (as well next week), tune into Taraana at 7pm for a fun filled evening. Come and join me as we explore this prodigy …

It's not about Walmart!

"Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; .. and I'm not sure about the the universe."- Albert Einstein

Continuing the discussion on why companies like Walmart should not be patronized ... I came across several other resources on the web like the walmartwatch.com and other related pro and anti walmart websites ... and such similar topics over the last few days. Well folks it is not about Walmart ... this is about some morals and principles in life ... what is Urdu has a perfect word - 'oosul'.

Pardon me for using the names of some established stores that I am familiar with, but using a real name makes it more visual rather calling something A, B or C. But I do not have anything against any establishment- it's about trying to figure out why I should shop in one place aginst another. They wanted me to have a choice- don't I have the right to figure out the right choice for myself in public? I think a dialogue will do us good here:
Q. Why should I go anywhere else if a 12-pack coke costs me $4.99 elsewhere but $2.99 at my favourite store?
A. True, we understand that expenses are an important part of everybody's agenda. Ok, let's be practicle and ask you- so if you have more money in the near future will you still be buying from your fav store and saving money? Chances are that you might. Now you might decide to gradually start moving to a slightly higher priced store gradually testing your budget ... and that's a good thing.

And besides, what good does soda do?

But this issue is beyond buying cheap or expensive. It is about what you as a human being feel about certain things. Try this:
Take a deep breath as you step into your favorite store. And let your senses be fully alert- sense everything around you, while you process all those things in your mind. Now try the same experiment at a different store, somewhere you mind a lot of natural products for example. How do you feel in each case?
Here's probably how you feel- at your favorite store all your senses will be flooded or rather bombasted with things. Your eyes see bright colors, bright lights, moving lights, large quantities of everything, large sizes of everything .... same with your nose- you smell strong fried chicken, buttered pop-corn, lots of meat, lots of perfumes and all other kinds of smells competing with each other to get to you ... I guess you get the picture ...
And now at the other store how are things ... very subtle, very gentle ... isn't it? Soft music, pleasing aromas, and serene colors ... What gives you more pleasure? To be bombarded with various things loud and big all at once or soft subtleties in life? You are a human being, an organism with higher intellect. What do you think is good for you? What do you think is nice to do?

And now the cost issue. Who knows or who has the time to find out how much our manufacturers pay to the producers of the goods we buy? We hear about Walmart paying 18 cents for an hour to some kid in Bangladesh to make a toy that is sold to the kids in the US for $18 a piece. Well now if I bought a similar toy for $25 from another store- would that mean that the store reimbursed more for this toy to whoever produced it? So should I feel morally nice to shell out a few extra bucks? Well that's not it ... that's not the point ... is it? The point is trying to be aware and respond responsibily. One day somewhere all wrong things backfire, and if you are in the way, you are bound to get hurt.

Remember the story of the
six blind men and the elephant? We tend to think and presume things in a manner where we are blinded by our own intellect. Are you sure you have considered the big picture?

Bag of Baloney

What's in your food?
Ever wondered why you suddenly wake up one day to find yourself sneezing your head off? Why do you suddenly have allergy symptoms after 25 years of no such history? Wondered why suddenly your immune system is out of balance? Seems all out of place especially since you have moved to the economically most prosperous nation in the world where everything is plentiful!!!

Here's some valuable advice from a leading chiropractor and clinical nationalist in Dallas, TX:
America is a land of abundance. Food is available cheap and in unimaginable quantities. But, unfortunately some form of unnatural chemical has touched every thing you can possible think of. When the general
population started moving from the country side to the urban settlements the agricultural industry came up with ways to treat and increase the shelf life of food. Once such case is with the grain used to make bread, popularly known as flour.
The industrial procedure of splitting the grain left it devoid of all the good nutrients and minerals it had. With people soon falling sick due to Vitamin B deficiencies, the government stepped in to enforce the enrichment of flour. However, the enrichment requires the industry to only add 4 kinds of vitamin B leaving out innumerable number of other essential nutrients. The result being that the average American resident has a vitamin B deficiency that lead to
problems ranging from stress to skin related problems. Read more ...

Cholesterol Myths
The biggest scam to date is the one related to cholesterol. It is a huge misnomer that cholesterol is the biggest reason for heart attacks. 50% of the victims of such an attack have normal cholesterol level. It is big rig that the pharmacies pull off in conjunction with the government by portraying unnaturally low cholesterol and selling pills at 200$ per prescription!!! So next time someone tells you that there is ton of cholesterol in egg yolk/egg white know that its whole load of baloney... Eggs are good for you. And the cholesterol in it is natural.
There is a marvelously convincing ad on TV these days, for a drug called Crestor. It promises to significantly lower cholesterol levels. Near the end, there is a subtitle with this caveat: Crestor has NOT been shown to reduce to the incidence of heart disease or heart attacks. What better admission can there be to say that cholesterol levels are essentially unrelated to coronary artery diseases? Read more ...

So, don't be surprised if you got up some day and started sneezing for a week after. Check the constituents of your diet...you might be missing something important.Eat natural, eat healthy and most importantly eat conciously!

What else can you do? Get inspired and inspire others to begin with.
Dr. Saraaf Zadegan can inspire you with her story which was featured on The World under the title 'Obesity in Iran'.

Featuring India's 'Radio Man' this week on Taraana

40 years can be a life time!
How one man had affected the lives of millions in that time frame is a story in it self. The voice of Ameen Sayani enriched the lives of a generation with his love-filled weekly Binaca Geet Mala- a radio programme that ranked popular Bollywood film songs every week. Long before we had even heard of the concept of chart busters- Ameen sahab created a prestigious ranking of popular hindi film music. Here was one man who challenged the frontiers of radio technology by making it even popular than it was ever dreamt of- so much so that people in India would not buy a radio set that did not receive Radio Ceylon! From 1953 to 1993, this show on Radio Ceylon magnetised the hearts and minds of millions of listeners in the Indian subcontinent.

Here's a listing of the most
popular songs in each of these years.

This popular programme returned to radio in a different form in 2001, playing every Sunday night aross the nation.
More ...

Who is this mysterious man? Come let's discover India's 'radio man' this Wednesday, right here on Taraana! Also check out this intimate interview with him.

Brave new ways to move the world

The Initiative
Brave New Films claim to tell us 'stories to build movements that can move the world'. Oh! We do need some help with that. We do seem to be stuck in one place or going around in circles.

What Happened
Ever wondered, why downtowns in some of the smaller towns like ours are so desolate and empty. So many old and quaint structures lie empty without a soul in sight. What happened to all the businesses? Downtowns are the heart of probably every American city- the city has no character without them. So what does this have to do with you? It has everything to do with you- because you are part of this society and you cannot just afford to sit back and watch! It shouldn't take too much intelligence to figure out that the more we take interest in things beyond our four walls- the brighter will be the the future of this society.

What's Happening
Do your share- join the movement! Catch the next screening of the film-

" WAL-MART: The High Cost of Low Price takes you behind the glitz and into the real lives of workers and their families, business owners and their communities, in an extraordinary journey that will challenge the way you think, feel... and shop". - quote from the WAL-MART blog.

In your town
College Station had a screening of the Walmart movie on Sunday Nov 13 at the Friends Congregational Church. There will possibly be another screening in Bryan at the Revolution Bar and Cafe. Watch this space for announcements.

Your $2 can save a life right now!

The earthquake in the Kashmir region has changed the lives of millions of people. Far more than any tragedy anywhere in the world this year! So many of them rushed to Muzaffarabad on the day of the quake from other parts of Pakistan, to find that they had lost their entire family. It is so difficult to lose one family member- think about the plight of hundreds of kids who have lost everything they had in this tragedy. And the tragedy does not end there for these people- they are fighting sub-zero temperatures in the Himalayas with little or no shelter.

How would we have reacted if Adnan, Mahrukh, Farhana were our near and dear ones? It is still not too late to help! Millions have lost their families, but let us- the billions of fortunate ones, stand by them and give them a warm hug. A couple of dollars from each of us would make more than enough to dwarf the pledges of the biggest and the strongest nations so far.

Please help in whatever way you can! It's easy- just pick one of the following and donate NOW!

* Unicef
* International Association for Human Values (IAHV)
* UNHCR
* World Food Programme
* International Federation of the Red Cross
* International Committee of the Red Cross
* International Organization for Migration
* Kashmir International Relief Fund
* Disasters Emergency Committee (UK)

Bollywood Film 10 point Recipe

with a pinch of salt ...
1. Two brothers separated in childhood will always grow up on different sides of the law. The law-breaker, however, will suddenly turn over a new leaf before the end, bash up the villain (who is the *real* bad guy), and be pardoned for all his sins before the last-scene family reunion. (This is possible only if he has a heroine - see rule 2 below).
2. If the number of heroes is not equal to the number of heroines, the excess heroes/heroines will a) die, b) join the Red Cross and take off to Switzerland before the end of the movie.
3. If there are 2 heroes in a movie, they will fight each other savagely for at least 5 minutes (10 if they are brothers).
4. Any court scene will have the dialogue "Objection milord". If it is said by the hero, or his lawyer, it will be overruled. Else, it will be sustained.
5. The hero's sister will usually marry the hero's best friend (i.e. the second hero). Else, she will be raped by the villain within the 1st 30 minutes, and commit suicide.
6. In a chase, the hero will always overtake the villain, even on a bullock-cart, or on foot.
7. When the hero fires at the villain(s), he will never a) miss, b) run out of bullets. When the villain fires at the hero, he will always miss (unless the hero is required to die, as in rule 2).
8. Any fight sequence shall take place in the vicinity of a stack of a) pots, b) barrels, c) glass bottles, which will be smashed to pieces.
9. Any movie involving lost and found brothers will have a song sung by a) the brothers, b) their blind mother (but of course, she has to be blind in order to regain her sight in the climax), c) the family dog/cat.
10. Police inspectors (when not played by the hero) come in two categories:a) Scrupulously honest, probably the hero's father - killedby the villain before the titles.
b) Honest, but always chasing the anti-hero (as in Rule 1), saying "Tum kanoon se bach nahin sakte", only to pat him in the back in reel 23. Usually, this inspector's daughter is in love with the anti-hero.
and of course there is the ...
c) The corrupt inspector, (usually the real villain's sidekick) unceremoniously knocked about by the hero(s) in the climax.

Happy World Usability Day!

November 3, 2005: World Usability Day ... now what's that?

Haven't heard of that one before ... I'm sure. But you don't have to look too far to figure this out. Don't you remember the umpteen times you have struggled to take the plastic cling wrap off a brand new CD?

"Why doesn't this work better? Why can't they make this easier?” World Usability Day, November 3, 2005, is for all the people who've ever asked questions like these- so says the Usability Professional's Association.

Remember the frustrations you've had with trying to figure out which direction to slide the credit card while making a payment? Remember that feeling at the gas station when you are left wondering how quickly to 'slide and remove' you credit card when you pay at the pump! How about the time when you want to switch between callers on your color screen cell phone, but hey- the screen light has switched off and left you in the dark just when you want to see the incoming number? Man am I stupid or is it actually that hard to remember the 4 step method to record a show from my TV- I know that feeling too! And do I not remember the innumerable instances as my guests have tried to wrestle their way out through my door- why do the door knobs have to turn both ways? Oh before I forget- winter is approaching and you are looking forward to that warm shower- make sure you get out of the way when you experiment with the shower knob.

So here's a message to all designers (just as they say at HFI): "To Err is Human, but they will blame you!". It's time to complain folks!

<-- Have you experienced this good interface yet?

Happy Deepawali!

Time to wipe out the darkness from the face of this earth ... and immerse in some celebration and joy!

Om asato ma sadgamaya,
Tamaso ma jyotir gamaya,
Mrityor ma amritam gamaya.
(Lead us from Falsehood to Truth; from Darkness to Light; and from Death to Immortality.)

Deepawali or Diwali is the festival of lights celebrated with great joy and fervour across India. This festival is celebrated on a grand scale in almost all the regions of India and is looked upon mainly as the beginning of New Year. As such the blessings of Lakshmi, the celestial consort of Lord Vishnu are invoked with prayers. Even countries like Kenya, Thailand, Trinidad, Siam and Malaya celebrate this festival but in their own ways.

Houses adorned with myriad clay lamps, and candles; children in new clothes, the sound of firecrackers on the streets, the chill of the first winter breeze and taste of mouth watering sweets explode into a colourful diaspora of celebration.

Meanwhile a creative soul at Pixar is giving form to some great ideas: http://drawn.ca/2005/11/01/happy-diwali/

The Made India team wishes a Happy Diwali to one and all!
