Well ... I should'nt say RiyazStudio is bad - but I should say, the demo version is limiting for advanced players :-)

The best way to start off is use an electronic shruti peti and a taal maala (which one can get from India if he/she is in India). They are just awesome.

Another great software shruti peti is RiyazStudio (http://www.riyazstudio.com/) - it's good enough for starters, however for more technically advanced, it's bad.

The way I practice (or intend to) is I have a demo version of RiyazStudio which gives me 2 diff tanpura tunings. The taal is totally disabled in the demo version. But given it's sound quality, I wouldn't even mind buying it (if I get serious about practicing.)

If your friend just needs to practice, RiyazStudio is good enough for the shruti as he can tune it. For the taal - what I do is - though RiyazStudio doesn't play the taal in the demo version, it still has all the taal files downloaded where it get's installed. So clicking on that MP3 might play the taal for him.

He will have to figure out what that taal is (as the file names don't indicated that) and he also won't be able to control the tempo (as in drut, madha, vilambit etc.)

But give and take, RiyazStudio is a good starting point to see if one is really interested in hindustaani. Besides, just for practicing raagas, taal is not even required. Conventionally, one gives the beat using hand. I didn't find any Taal software which would let me control the tempo available for free.

Swarshaala by Swar Systems is just ok. The demo of Riyaaz Studio is much better (in my opinion) as it gives a lot to do.

Hope that helps!
Vishal
